MP University May 2017 – Questions and Answers

Q: Will the webinar be recorded?

A: Yes, the session will be recorded and a link to the recording will be sent to everyone who registered.

A: Yes – the webinar will be recorded and made available to all participants

Q: Really happy you are recording. I have a meeting i have too attend, and who knows what emergency will come up

A: Our YouTube channel is – the sessions will be posted there as soon as possible after the end of the sessions.

Q: I would like to know if during this presentation the issue of putting licensing in your MP will be adressed. I would like to make some money with my MP’s πŸ˜‰

A: I would suggest that you ask this question in the MP Q&A session in the Ask the Experts session at 11:00 AM EST

Q: Doesn’t the diagnostic task run first?

A: Yes

Q: Can we clone a MP?

A: I wont use the word clone, but with our new Fragment Authoring you can in essance use any element from any sealed MP and “convert” the element to a Fragment. Then teh fragment can be used to create an element for of your new MP.Stay tuned for 12:15 session

Q: In the SCOM console numbers do not get reflected in the unique name when creating a MP. Does MP Author override that, or is this allowed in SCOM 2016?

A: Following your email clarification, the file name of an XML MP file must match the name of the MP. It’s a restriction Microsoft enforces, so you would need to make sure the MP has the name you want.

Q: Can we create template for specific functions of MP?

A: That’s what fragments are for. That will be discussed in more detail in the session on fragments.

A: Agan – fragments and authoringg fragments will probably do what you need. Stay for both sessions related to fragments

Q: for keys under wow6432node what do we need to configure here ?

A: There is a special tag in the XML called <RegistryView> that you can use to force the discvoery to look in both locations, 32bit and 64bit.

Q: What’s the difference between Windows Computer vs. Windows Operating System? Don’t they both know about LogicalDisk?

A: Both are simply classes. Windows Computer is a class that “contains” both “Windows Operating System” and Logical Disk.

Q: Is there a way to operate on MPs with MP Author (including Kevin’s MP Fragments support) by PowerShell or some other script-based API instead of GUI?

A: No MP Author is just a GUI… There is no script-based API.

Q: OK, thanks for the answer. Don’t think i might be able to make it, but will try.

A: I will ask your question for you during the session – if you check out the recording there will hopefully be an answer.

Q: Can you wild card a discovery? i.e a set of services all starting with a common name. servicename*

A: Yes you can, but it would require a custom discvoery using script or WMI. The registry discovery module does not natively support a wildcard

Q: Can custom fields in the alert when it is generated?

A: Any alert generating rule can generate data for custom fields. Monitors cannot.

Q: can you populate alert custom fields of monitors

A: No – this is an unfortunate limitation of monitor alert modules. However, you can modify alert custom fields from monitor based alerts AFTER the alert is generated.

Q: Is it possible to collect attributes?

A: Yes, the class definition needs to create a “property” then the discvoery needs to populate it.

Q: so registryview enabled it looks for both locations ?

A: our regsitry browser looks thru both

Q: Why rules dont have timeintervals that can be set or changed ?

A: It depends on the datasource. If the rule is event datasource, it runs in real time, always, not on a timer. However, if the rule is a script, it does use an interval.

Q: Where do you create groups in MP Author

A: Under classes – create new group

Q: Can you auto run a task from within the MP?

A: I believe you can. Other option is to create script rule to run automatically and run a task

Q: the .xml files will not have the numbers in the filename

A: MP Author automatically updates the version #. Once they are in SCOM can only see in Administation – Management Pack view

Q: 7.0 we had tagets now we have classes does it change how Registry class discover

A: it’s just a change in terminology

Q: Is there any restriction while test simulating the rules or monitors?

A: MP Studio can test MP’s and has support for many (but not all) module types. All derived module types are supported, but there are some low-level module types which are not supported (like Linux and SNMP).

Q: Should we use Windows Computer as a target? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to use Windows Server Operating System (assuming we only care about servers)?

A: Ideally, you use the most specific target class that will work for you. If your objects exist only on Servers, then using Server is a much better choice that Computer.

Q: Is the previous MP university recording available?

A: Yes – check our Youtube channel for previous recordings – this is the fall session recording

Q: Is there an online community where people share fragments?

A: We will announce that TODAY at12:15 session

A: It’s coming. Please join us at 12:15 for the creating fragments session where we will be discussing our plans.

Q: One of the challenges with registry discoveries is that for 3rd party applications and even custom ones we don’t control changes to things like service names. Consequently the service name changes in a new release and monitoring is lost. Secondly the discoveries work too well – we find an application running on all servers in our environment. Is there a way to limit this to a set of servers?

A: Selecting the correct Target is key there. By creating your own discovery, you will have a Target that is more focused. Also, see Marnix’s session later today where he will show you how to use Groups to filter discoveries.

Q: Does MP Author allow creating a management pack for Linux? Are there any templates with the required references in the GUI wizard.

A: It doesn’t “natively” let you create Linux MPs from scratch, but if you have a Linux fragment, that’ll work.

Q: Fragments: O_O – w.o.w.

A: We agree πŸ˜‰

A: Glad you like it !

Q: Does the app record the admin making the changes?

A: MP Studio does have auditing of who and when if changes are made in MP Studio, also audit what was changed/added/deleted. I can do a demo or you can se on our Youtube channel

Q: Mp fragments always end with .mpx format ?

A: Yes that is the convention

Q: Where do you get all these pre-created fragments?

A: Mike will be covering that in his next session

Q: Can wildcards be used when specifiying the service(s) to be monitored?

A: The Microsoft module type for monitoring services does not support wildcards in the service name. You should be able to do it with a PowerShell monitor.

Q: is what Kevin demo’ing about fragment usage/templating only available in the MP Author Pro version?

A: Available in Professional AND MP Studio

A: Free MP Author support just 3 fragments to allow a user to get the feel of what it is like to use fragments. Full support is only available in MP Author Pro and MP Studio.

Q: Is there a way to track the process instance typically in a multi process scenario ?

A: Answered by Kevin.

Q: Can you supply a stock product/company knowlege section with a fragment?

A: Yes fragments can have knowledge

Q: can we have a copy of the management class fragment library that he is using in the demo?

A: Yes it is available on GitHub… Mike will cover this in his session.

Q: Does MP Studio support integration with TFS for version control? Other version control system (Git)?

A: NO. MP Studio has it’s own version control, auditing capabilities. Audit reports can be scheduled even and results emailed. The Store database contains scheduled back up of all unsealed MPs and this seemlessly audits changes. The store database becomes teh central distribution point for all MPs. Deployment can be managed form here very nicely.

Q: After deploying, can you rollback if necessary?

A: Yes assuming the copy you want is in the store database.

Q: or do you have to delete and redeploy the fixed MP

A: Correct, delete and re-deploy teh desired version from Store

Q: Holy Fragmentation Batman – I could actually author an MP without sweating blood/tears and tearing out my hair (well, what’s left of it…)

A: Mission accomplished! πŸ™‚

Q: Can we sign a MP with MP Author?

A: Yes

A: Yes. In Author or Professional or Studio, right click on root and choose Seal

Q: What is MP Author “keying off of” in order to determine the type of “Browser” to bring up when the user clicks on “Browse”?

A: The choice of browser is based on the parameter name… Mike will cover this in his session.

Q: are there fragments for dependency monitors?

A: Yes… you can find examples in the fragments library download that Mike will cover in his session.

Q: Scenario: Customer sends a list of 100 services. All services in the list start with “abc” and end with a GUID. These services need to be distinctly discovered and monitored (think multi-instance). Can this be accomplished using a single fragment that implements regex?

A: great question, lets see what the answer is πŸ™‚ I will make sure to ask Kevin at end of his session

A: Yes, πŸ™‚ 1 – needs to be discovered 2) – needs to be monitored – WMI wildcard or script based.

Q: We use the contents of Custom Fields in alerts to provide variables for automating our ticket generation. Is that available to input those custom field contents in alerts from rules created in MP Author? And how about alerts from monitors? If not from monitors, is that a limitation in SCOM?

A: Custom fields for alerts are not available at the time an alert is generated (SCOM limitation for monitors)

Q: Is there a way to track the process instance typically in a multi process scenario ?

A: Great Q but no it’s not possible. Limitation of process monitoring module in SCOM

A: Kevin had to use script-based monitoring

Q: Do you fragments for SNMP monitors

A: Yes. Kevin has a discovery for SNMP, a monitor for SNMP, and two rules handling SNMP traps. Silect will be providing a monitor to take SNMP data and run it through a PowerShell script to conver the data to something SCOM can use.

Q: Is the store database a SQL Server database?

A: Yes

Q: Where MP author get the informations for references?

A: The list of required references is at the top of each fragment (in the comments).

Q: does it save old versions of the mp for rollback?

A: MP Studio can

Q: Are these fragments Kevin is using from the library Mike will be covering and just renamed?

A: Kevin has a core set of fragments. The library is available on GitHub and Mike will cover how you easily get the latest version in his session.

Q: How can we have the Management packs sealed directly through MP Pro

A: right clcik on MP name and choose “Seal”

Q: Can we only create new performance collection rules or can we also relate our App class to existing perf collectors? (in our example: MS PrintingServer stock mp already collects print queue, so it wouldn’t make sense to create duplicated collection for that)

A: You can relate perf collection rules to whatever you want… but you need to edit XML

Q: So if I got this right, Fragments are only being used via Visual Studio or MP Athoring PRO right?

A: And MP Studio

Q: Any public library for Fragments?

A: Yes… stay tuned for Mike’s session

Q: Is there a difference to the snippets in VSAE?

A: Common Q. Kevin had a blog on snippets

Q: could we also use the fragments to paste them into xml editors ?

A: What you do with the fragments is up to you… using a tool is much easier though πŸ˜‰

Q: If you have several applications that all monitor windows services. Is it a better practice to break them into different MPs or bundle them together?

A: No best practice necessarily but all apps should have separate MPs

A: Make sure an owner is assigned to the app or MP to ensure it’s current, etc.

Q: why regkey takes too long to discover

A: regkey is usually really fast

Q: Does Kevin have plans to expand on the Unix fragment options?

A: Absolutely will just need to know what people want

A: buy anyone can create fragments

Q: Do you have .NET APM specific fragments?

A: Not at this time but it can be fragmentized

Q: Hi Kevin, I have the need to create a monitor wich collect data from a PowerShell script, but rais an alert only after a consecurive number of samples over a threshold. Is that possible in SCOM ?

A: Yes totally possible. PS monitor with consecutive samples. Can use “match count”

Q: How to use custom powershell monitor, can it be configured through MP pro

A: Yes but it’s custom PS. Check out Monitor.TimedScript.Powershell fragment

Q: When creating custom DataSources and MonitorTypes on which one can create UnitMonitors. Should the Fragment contain the Datasource and UnitMonitorType as well or are they different (Library) Fragments ?

A: great advanced authoring concept. You have to use one or the other. Want to limit size of unsealed MPs.

Q: Do you have an snmp monitior for printer monitoring via OIDs

A: Yes but not specific for printers

Q: Does MP Autor allow event id range

A: Event ID field does support Regex. You can do this in a fragment

Q: How do you make custom parameters of a script monitor overrideable?

A: You add these to the “overrideable paramters” in XML

Q: Does the fragments have the option to filter the events( for monitors / rules ) based on the parameters (as seen in the event XML)?

A: Yes. Fragments have more options that available in authoring tools

Q: NOTE: If you write a management pack, you should write a document, simplified but similar to teh MS SCOM MP docs. This will help you track and remember later about the MP

A: Agreed. We can also put product knowledge int he MP directly using MP author

Q: If you are monitoring multiple services for an application, what would be best practice to create a single Services class and utilize discovery to find each instance for different service names, or create individual classes for each service that needs discovered?

A: Monitor type parameters cannot be changed so better to do this via fragment and use overrideable parameters

Q: Jonathan Almquist wrote a nice article on “MatchCount”. It works like a charm!

A: Excellent. Thanks for this info. Do you have a URL we can share with others?

Q: is there a way to write a service monitor that alerts after it’s been stopped for X minutes instead of alerting immediately?

A: All monitor type parameters cannot be changed so better to do this via a fragment

A: Thanks.

Q: if we have to limit the size of unsealed MP what about quantity ??

A: Kevin said that lots of small MP’s is much better than few very large MP’s

Q: Do you have an snmp monitior for monitoring network devices fe f5?

A: No but lots of goof F5 MPs on market

Q: Have you designed a fragment(s) for Cisco Nexus switches? ex: FCoE

A: No

Q: Here is Jonathan Almquist’s article on MatchCount:

A: Thanks.

Q: RE: MatchCount URL request –

A: Thank you

Q: is it possible to put a single monitor or rule in maintenance mode for a certain repeatedly Periode in the configuration tab of the properties of rule or monitor?

A: Nope. Only way is to create a custom class just for that rule or monitor

Q: Here’s the URL to Jonathan’s article:

A: Thanks.

Q: Is it ok to point event provider modules to the Security log? I’m thinking of senarios with high volume events like DCs in large enviornemnts. What is the best way to parse the Security log in this senario, WEF?

A: It’s questionable. No single Microsoft MP that uses Security Event Log. # events is massive.

Q: Here’s the URL to the MSDN article describing the System.ExpressionFilter’s new ‘MatchCount” & “SampleCount” elements:

A: Great thank you

Q: Would it possible to monitor all the errors in the application log or any other event log irrespective of the event id and source?

A: Yes you can do that. Kevin doesn’t recommend doing that but it might be noisey

Q: Is there a limitation on the number of groups in a management group?

A: No hard limits. SCOM testing only up to 500 groups. Some customer have 1100 groups.

Q: When working with SCCM within SCOM, can fragments be created to put data from SCCM?

A: Yes they can. Need to know common data source.

Q: I have a flapping disk monitor on one server in a group. Agent repair hasn’t worked – Troubleshooting tips?

A: A little out of scope for this disucssion. Likely an authoring issues

Q: The sec log parsing on the DC and the grab all events questions may look at using something like OMS log analytics

A: OMS is likely more appropriate solution for security event collection and analysis

Q: If i have custom MP with groups rules etc and i neead made some changes and import modyfied MP but not update previous version – just add another one and keep both ? is any easy way to prepare changes / rename all bjects in this chnaged mp ?

A: Version # should always increment. Some changes e..g. IDs will result in a new MP

Q: Are there any simple solutions for SCOM and Remedy

A: Micorosft Orchestrator is one solution

Q: Is there an advantage of using VSAE over MP Studio?

A: VSAE is less bound by any limitation but is for advanced MP authors. MP Studio has different features and capabiltiies. Depends what you need from an authoring tool

Q: Mp authors can see if something have change in unsealed MP when change was made in scom console?

A: Unfortunately no

A: Yes in MP Studio we can see changes

Q: I manage a 2007 R2 and 2012 R2 environments. Any suggestions on having all Alerts viewable and manageable in only one of the consoles (i.e. 2012 R2 console)?

A: Nope – don’t support connected MGs across different versions

Q: Kelverion Integration Pack for BMC Remedy AR System

A: THanks for the info Andrew

Q: are there any large benefits of separating discovery and monitoring into different management packs ?

A: Kevin feels absolutely not.

Q: Unrelated to fragments…I have been using VSAE and TFS for version control, which helps us understand who made changes, what was changed, and when – complete tracking. How do the version control features in MP Studio compare to what TFS provides?

A: Randy responded to this Q. For all the details contact Randy at

Q: SCOM 2012 can connect to SCOM 2016 console utilizing the connected MG’s

A: Not sure if it’s officially supported but thanks for the info

Q: RE: My last question may have just been answered. Disregard. πŸ™‚

A: Will do

Q: It is possible to take a override in MPStudio for a single server, not a group? OR MPs shows in MPStudio allready the Servername, but i cant take servernames for overrides

A: Not at this time you cannot target a single server, you could target a group that has a single server

Q: Can Alert Names be dynamic data

A: See my blog post on this.

Q: Can it be encrypted

A: A “sealed” MP is encrypted. However it cannot be protected from unencryption

Q: Are there plans in the roadmap to connect MP Studio version control to TFS?

A: Connections to TFS and GitHub are being considered – but there are no definite plans – email if you want to suggest that we increase the priority of this feature in a future release

Q: Invaluable resource to all who are using SCOM. I cannot tell you how many times my web search for anything SCOM related starts with “Holman” πŸ™‚

A: So true

Q: While SCOM 2012 console can connect to a 2016 MG, it is not supported by MS.

A: Thanks Scott

Q: Hi Randy, If I understand your explanation of the May Special you are essentially saying : buy by May 31 and get liftime upgrades” am I interpreting you correctly.

A: Not exactly…. you get free upgrades and support for the “first year” at no charge. After the first year you can purchase the following year’s annual maintenance and support

Q: hmmm, this Holman guy has done a few…

A: We are so happy that he has shared them with the world πŸ™‚

Q: Why would you create an empty fragment?

A: We don’t create empty fragments… Mike will show that you create a fragment based on an existing element

A: I have an empty fragment just to show the “structure” of what a fragment looks like, and where to put stuff….. when generating a new fragment manually via XML editor. Normally, it would not be that useful beyond that.

Q: I might have missd this – can you share the GitHub link to the MP Studio fragment library?

A: It is “private” right now – not sure it is available just yet.

A: Hi Jonathan, we will share this with you offline later,

A: Jonathan, we will set you up πŸ™‚ Its not generally available yet but as an early adopter it would be great to have your eyes on it

Q: we can only create fragments with mp author pro?

A: Correct

A: MP Author Professional and MP Studio can be used to Author Fragments

A: Correection, MP Studio or MP Author Professional can create fragments. MP Author “FREE” cannot !

Q: And MP Studio ?

A: Yes MP Studio can author Fragments

Q: When is the update for MP Studio available with create fragments?

A: MP Studio Beta of V8 will be available around May 15

Q: is it possible to create Fragments from (old) SCOM 2007 R2 MPs ?

A: Yes, any MP. Any workflow.

A: You can create fragments from elements in any MP

Q: Can MP Author “FREE” use fragments?

: MP Author (free) has limited support for fragments

A: Limited to 3 fragments to give a feel for fragment support.

Q: Could you review “Secure References”?

A: Secure References are simply RunAs accounts – they alink a RunAs profile to a workflow – so the workflow will execute as that credential, assuming the Profile is associated with a RunAs credential.

Q: I accidentaly stumbled upon the handouts, please point out they’re available for DL

A: thanks for pointing this out Brian

Q: When importing our unsealed mpΒ΄s into MP Studio, they reference management pack versions we donΒ΄t have available anymore, how can we solve this or where can we get older versions of MS MPΒ΄s?

A: Are these Microsoft MP’s? You can download a LOT of old MP’s at

Q: yes, the missing once are usually MS, but are really older version available for download

A: The cool thing is that you can use “newer” ones for reference requirements. You dont have to have the old version

A: If you “desperately” need something – without no other solution – send me an email directly – – I keep a huge repository.

Q: has a great archive of MPs, both MS and other.

A: Thanks for pointing this out Stephen

Q: MpAuthor Need to have a full library of MP to can reference it ??

A: MPAuthor ships with a bunch of reference MP’s for SCOM 2012, 2012 SP1, 2012R2, and 2016. You can add your own MP’s to be referenced in a reference library path.

Q: for customizing MP Report, do we still depend on the SQL report function?

A: If you’re asking whether the reports that are viewable in the SCOM console still rely on SQL Server Reporting Services, then the answer would be yes…if this is not what you’re asking about, please clarify with a follow-up

Q: OMS Was an Add In to SCOM or a futur replacement of SCOM

A: OMS is entirely different than SCOM, its a set of Azure services – maybe theoretically a future replacement, who knows, no immediately plans, currently complementary

Q: How do you see OMS as compared to Splunk and the capabilities of Splunk as a “Log Analytics tool” ?

A: Brian doesn’t feel competent to answer – will research

A: we will send a response as part of follow up

Q: Are there any plans to convert SCOM into SaaS solution? Maybe integrate into OMS?

A: If Brian did know they were doing that, he wouldn’t be allowed to say so – but he doesn’t know

Q: What kind of support is offered for other cloud providers, OMS for AWS for example? SCOM has the AWS MP, any integration between OMS and AWS?

A: According to Brian – OMS should possibly be able to connect to AWS, either now or in near future

Q: Do you still need a paid Azure subscription to use OMS with SCOM?

A: Brian thinks you can use it with the free version – not certain

Q: would you say OMS provides better trend analysis, exa: disk utilization growth that will warn that free space will run out at a certain point in the future. I don’t see that in SCOM, is that correct?

A: Brian says yes

Q: Can Management solutions be extended to other cloud environments like AWS or its restricted to MS Azure?

A: Brian says that there are no restrictions in connecting to other cloud environments

Q: Actually, let me put this way, can I modify the Reports in the MP with MP authoring tool or I have to use SQL Report builder to create new one?

A: The report builder is probably still your best bet

Q: please share your blog url

A: Marnix’s blog is:

Q: Will all these presentations be available offline?

A: Yes – they will be posted to the Silect YouTube channel at:

Q: Does MP Author have any issues with SCOM 2016?

A: MP Author, MP Author Professional, and MP Studio fully support SCOM 2016 (as well as all versions of SCOM 2012).

Q: When we are adding the computers in a group, why do we need a generic registry key for discovery?

A: the generic key always works

Q: Couldn’t that override (for enabling discovery for a group) be already built into MP autored by MP Author?

A: No, MP Author doesn’t allow for it. You could however edit the XML code directly.

Q: What is the approach to sealing the MP ?

A: MP Author supports sealing MPs

Q: can you make a DA with that class?

A: Yes, you can. But as long the MP containing this Class is unsealed, the DA will be saved into the same unsealed MP as well. Also you can only add instances of Classes contained in other sealed MPs.

Q: Can you specify overrides precedence order on group,class,rule/monitor?

A: Override precedence is fixed by SCOM. See this article:

Q: removal of Silverlight dependency .. does that apply to Web Console as well?

A: Yes… Aditya is covering that now.

Q: Are there going to be any plans to have a “legacy” MP that will run on 2016 MMA version and be able to be in a 2016 Mgmt Group, BUT still run the SQL 2005 & WInOS 2003 Workflows? Basically, as you probably know SQL 2005 and 2003 Server are not supported in 2016 and its current MMA…so do I have to still maintain a 2012 R2 Ur11 infra or will I be able to have a 2016 MMA that will support them still?? I assume the answer is no and I will retain a 2012 R2 infra just to keep doing legacy stuff…correct?

A: Your assumptions are correct. Server 2003 as an agent is not supported for the SCOM 2016 agent. There is no supported method to have a Windows Server 2003 server report to a SCOM 2016 management group. Technically, you could probably install the SCOM 2012 R2 agent on those, and they would report to a SCOM 2016 management group, but that will not be supported by Microsoft. To be supported – you would need to retain a small SCOM 2012 R2 management group for Windows 2003. Now, on SQL 2005, there is no reason that MP cannot be imported into SCOM 2016….. but if your SQL 2005 is on WS2003 OS, then you are out of luck. πŸ™‚

Q: seems that multiple customers are having issues with the SCOM 2016 agent causing app pools to crash. Hopefully you can touch on currently known issues for customers migrating to 2016

A: I’ll let Aditya comment on this – but it is under investigation and updates will be coming out to resolve this. In the meantime there are published workarounds using -NOAPM on the agent installation to not be affected.

A: (Aditya said there will be a fix for this in UR3 for sure, and that it should also be in a hotfix)

Q: Can Orchestrator initiate maintence mode?

A: Yes, always could. Initiating MM is available via the SDK/PowerShell both of wich SCORCH can leverage.

Q: the legacy IIS stuff crashing was supposedly fixed in UR2 for 2016.

A: , it is planned for UR3 right now I believe. It still exists in UR2.

Q: Thanks. Aware of the -NOAPM switch but that means you have to do a manual install and then run a script to turn the agents to remotely manageable. Not a real solution. We are waiting for the UR to come out

A: Totally understand.

Q: It seems that there are multiple issues with SCOM when TLS 1.0 is disabled, even if 1.1 and/or 1.2 are enabled (SCOM<>SQL connectivity, MS<>GW connectivity). This affects both 2012 and 2016. Are there any plans for SCOM to support up-to-date versions of TLS for the back-end connectivity? This is a big issue for companies where TLS 1.0 is being forcibly disabled as it is a security risk.

A: This is known, supporting TLS 1.2 is not that simple, as it will require additional software prerequisites. There is work being done across the board to improve support for TLS 1.2, inclusing for SCOM, but I dont know if there is a date announced for this. I hear this from a lot of customers being pressured to disable all older authentication mechanisms. I’ll let Aditya comment if he has any public-facing info on this yet.

Q: Reporting Tab is going to be added in web console ?

A: As of now – no plans, but get more feedback to this

Q: Is there a fix for the APM issue with Sharepoint?

A: he is discussing that now

Q: What type of migration are we expecting…inplace upgrade, fre4sh install…???

A: Both. Either. Your choice

Q: Any plan to release BlueStripe Service Mapping for SCOM w/o using OMS?

A: Being considered.

Q: Do OMS updates still wipe out SCOM group settings in the agent?

A: cole you can email detals to Silect I will ake sure Kevin and Aditya get copies of Questions

Q: Will SCOM 2016 have operational intelligence like Splunk?

A: (Aditya said that they are looking at integrating in with OMS for adding log analytics)

Q: any plans to increase the number of concurrent connections, right now at 50…

A: Not at this time.

Q: Can you more easily use the AlertContext$ Param to pass into Notifications and Connectors? I may not be asking that correctly.

A: Feel free to expand on the question and email to e and we will forward to Kevin and Aditya then circulate

Q: with Fluentd would it require additional hardware for centralizing logs and then do the logic?

A: Aditya said no

Q: BlueStripe capability .. I have an active requirement for it right now

A: (not currently – they are considering support for the future)

Q: Will Service Manager 2016 services pull service components from SCOM 2016 DA components if the DA MP has also been imported to SCSM?

A: (Aditya can sync up with the right folks and get the answer if you want to email him)

Q: Is there any plan to modify SCOM to be able to pass Alert Parameters into the subject lines of notifications. instead of just seeing {0} in values. We send a number of alerts for URL monitoring and makes it extremely difficult to see what is affected based off the subject line.

A: Kevin wrote a blog article on this, but he is not aware of anyone looking at that, he suggested opening up a case with MS and asking them to file a request for a change (not enough customer feedback that its a big problem)

Q: OMS has built in integration with Cherwell… any plans that you know of to integrate SCOM 2016 into Cherwell… any additional API capabillites?

A: Kevin says that most of integration is done via Orchestrator and Orchestrator is the integration solution, so if there was any work with Cherwell integration, it would be done via Cherwell

Q: Would Fluentd based log monitoring of Linux require additional servers and storage for monitoring?

A: Aditya – says that it doesn’t require additional servers & storage – needs the agent to be updated to the latest version supporting Fluent monitoring

Q: ARe there plans to add more functionality to the powershell cmdlets?

A: Aditya asked for you to send him an email on your specific requirements

Q: Are all of the BaseOS MP still the same scripts…Is there a new BaseOS MP for all Server version 08-16 that may be in the works for newly written workflows that may use PowerShell modules more so than VB or WMI? Any changed with the Logical Disk stuff perhaps and maybe being able to filter better on LDS class objects in views and notifications? <You dont have to ask this question but it would be nice to know> Thanks everyone!

A: In 2016 all the core SCOM MPs now all use Powershell (2.0 or later) – everything going forward will be PS since as of SCOM 2016 all machines are guaranteed to be running PS

A: All SCOM core MP’s have been ported to PowerShell in SCOM 2016. NEW base OS MP’s now on will be PS.

Q: Can you point to best practices for SCOM and SCOM Datawarehous Database implementation and maintenance

A: Such a wide topic it can’t be addressed simply – Kevin has a lot of blog articles on this that you can review – they do 4 day workshops on this

Q: Does the SCOM 2016 Authoring Pane in console make it easier to quickly leverage powershell or is it stil vbs based?

A: Unfortunately no – it doesn’t include new UI page sets. They have a PFE at MS who has written some extensions that will allow you to do this – although Kevin recommends that you look at fragments

Q: Most painless way to remove redundant Management Groups from multi-homed SCOM agents remotely?

A: Kevin has an agent-agent MP that he will be posting about in the near future, that will provide this capability

Q: Is there a plan to allow a scom agent to initiate maintenance mode clientside for planned reboots during patching or other misc. reasons? I see in Uservoice this was listed over a year ago and listed as under review but not further info.

A: That exists in SCOM 2016 – there is a PS client you can use to initiate maintenance mode

Q: If I may correct my question best practises for “SCOM 2016 Database” and if you can point to any specific article/document related to it

A: Kevin has a blog article on that.

Q: Is there a good tool for preparing to upgrade to 2016? To make sure custom management packs are compatible?

A: Tao Yang and Wei Lim have written upgrade MPs – Kevin is not sure if they’ve written anything for 2012 to 2016 – the schema hasn’t changed so Kevin doesn’t think there should be any upgrade issues

Q: If Client side maintennce mode can be initiated, does that mean SCCM will properly honor maintenance mode?

A: It can….. it can call the PS at the start of a package deployment.
